Steven Fridman (Lima, Perú)
My artistic practice stems from a need to understand the world we live in. I am interested in the social, cultural, and technological phenomena that shape our time, but above all in the ideas, patterns, tensions, and forces that operate beneath them.
Each series begins with a concern or a question. I explore the territory around it, consider different ways of understanding it, and from these perspectives develop my own interpretation. I am particularly drawn to contradictions that reveal the complexity of our experience: what liberates us while also restricting us, what connects us but can also make us dependent, the natural and the artificial, pleasure and prohibition.
I often begin with images, objects, signs, or visual structures drawn from everyday life. I displace, fragment, simplify, or alter them to create a certain distance between what we see and what we think we know. At times, this process delays recognition; at others, it transforms something immediately familiar into an image that asks us to look at it again.
Beauty, color, humor, irony, and play are part of my visual language, allowing me to draw the viewer toward questions that may be complex. I am not interested in illustrating theories or offering definitive answers. The work proposes a perspective while leaving room for others.
I approach each series as a form of inquiry through art: a way of stepping back from what we live with, observing it from another angle, and returning it transformed so that it can be seen again.

Mi práctica artística nace de una necesidad de comprender el mundo en el que vivimos. Me interesan los fenómenos sociales, culturales y tecnológicos que atraviesan nuestra época, pero sobre todo las ideas, patrones, tensiones y fuerzas que operan detrás de ellos.
Cada serie comienza con una preocupación o una pregunta. Investigo el territorio que la rodea, confronto distintas maneras de entenderlo y, a partir de ellas, construyo mi propia interpretación. Me interesan especialmente las contradicciones que revelan la complejidad de nuestra experiencia: aquello que libera y al mismo tiempo restringe, lo que nos conecta y puede hacernos dependientes, lo natural y lo artificial, el placer y la prohibición.
Con frecuencia parto de imágenes, objetos, signos o estructuras visuales que forman parte de nuestra vida cotidiana. Los desplazo, fragmento, simplifico o altero para crear cierta distancia entre lo que vemos y lo que creemos conocer. A veces ese proceso retrasa el reconocimiento; otras veces transforma algo inmediatamente reconocible en una imagen que obliga a mirarlo nuevamente.
La belleza, el color, el humor, la ironía y el juego forman parte de mi lenguaje y me permiten acercar al espectador a preguntas que pueden ser complejas. No busco ilustrar teorías ni ofrecer respuestas definitivas. La obra propone una perspectiva y deja abierta la posibilidad de otras.
Entiendo cada serie como una forma de investigación a través del arte: una manera de tomar distancia de aquello que vivimos, observarlo desde otro ángulo y devolverlo transformado para hacerlo nuevamente visible.
